Elsa Stansfield and Madelon Hooykaas
Outside Inside (1982)
collection of the artist
In the context of the research initiative 404 Object Not Found: What remains of Media Art? and the exhibition Thirty Years Dutch Video Art, the installation work 'Outside Inside' by artists Elsa Stansfield and Madelon Hooykaas was selected as one of four case studies used to examine the documentation and preservation of multimedia installations with the purpose of designing a model for installation registration and re-installation.
This installation consists of a handmade wind vane on which a camera is connected. The wind vane is placed on a precise spot on the roof and has a direct connection to four monitors in the exhibition space. These monitors each represent a wind direction. The wind vane (according to the wishes of the artists, needs to be installed in a visible spot. The installation originates of coincidences and spontaneity. The form of the installation depends on the location of presentation. The artist provided the Netherlands Media Art Institute with their work so that it can be preserved and re-installed for future presentations.
