Inside Installations

During a three year project (2004 - 2007) museums and other institutions in Europe have joined hands in a large-scale collaborative project to investigate the care and administration of installations work of art.

For the last few decades museums have been collecting installation art works produced with non-traditional materials and media, such as video, film, computers, light and sound. The conservation of these works raises numerous questions.

 

The Netherlands Institute for Media Art together with the Instituut Collectie Nederland (ICN) managed two of the the 33 case studies: Revolution by Jeffrey Shaw & Tjebbe van Tijnen & Albert's Ark by Bill Spinhoven.

. Theory and Practice in the Care of Complex Artworks

 

May 20 — The maintenance and conservation of installation art presents a big challenge. This documentary, produced under the commission of the SBMK, will be presented for the first time and aims to provide a glimpse from behind the scenes regarding contemporary art preservation practices and to shed light on the conservation of media art and performance based art.

 

Anything is possible in installation art. The typically short lifespan of the materials and techniques used and the intended experience can be endless, often to the despair of the custodian of the work. The processes involved in preserving this complex form of art; reinstalling it, finding ways to recreate the experience over and again, as well as the decision-making that underlies these processes, form the backbone of this book.
