Live urban projections Westergasfabriek

  April 2, 2010

Stadsdeelkantoor’s façade
Start: at 8.30 pm.

‘The Media City’ presents  a night session with façade projections consisting of a number of large-scale art projections at Stadsdeelkantoor’s façade, in the Westergasfabriek on Friday, April 2. The projected images explore cultural fields such as digital media & VJ culture, urbanism, architecture, art and social interaction. The artworks will merge the material and immaterial in an attempt to redefine the skin of the building.

These projections has been developed during the workshop ‘The Media City’, hosted at the Netherlands Media Art Institute in March 2010. During this encounter international artists from Sao Paulo, Lima, Durban, Douala and Netherlands based artist have been given the opportunity to explore the possibilities of visual programming interfaces for urban facades and have developed their own site specific concept that will liven up Westergasfabriek’s architecture with artistic journeys on Friday April 2, at 8.30 pm.

The Media City is a workshop organised by the Netherlands Media Art Institute and TIME_FRAME, which investigates architecture as narrative and social interaction in public space. It looks at how these specific languages, spaces of cultural meaning, can be translated into media art projects, in which similarities from African and Latin American cities can be found and re-interpreted in Amsterdam. One of the biggest challenges during the workshop has been to find the adequate form of content for Stadsdeelkantoor’s façade at the Westergasfabriek, trying to harmonize with the rhythm of the building.
