Wouter Venema wins René Coelho award 2007

The jury of the René Coelho award (Giny Vos, artist, Nanda Janssen, curator, and Ellen de Bruijne, gallery owner) expressed their satisfaction with the great variety and the quality of the works nominated.

The graduates nominated were:
Viola Groenhart, Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam
Maike Lond, Royal Academy for the Visual Arts, The Hague
Wouter Venema, ArtEZ, Academy for visual arts, Arnhem
Polo Vreedenburgh, AKI, ArtEZ, Academy for visual arts, Enschede
Dorien de Wit, AKV/St. Joost, Den Bosch

The diversity in the video works, animation, video and audio installations, and their high quality made the jury's work complicated. Ultimately the agreed-upon criteria – concept, coherence, imagination and execution – were decisive, in a process in which the project description for a new work to be produced was also taken into consideration.
The jury had considerable appreciation for the well composed tension curve in the film by Viola Groenhart, and found the interaction in the sound and light installation by Maike Lond exceptional. In its combination of serenity and absurdity, the work by Wouter Venema appealed to the imagination, and with Polo Vreedenburgh the mix of dance and animation was convincing. In the case of Dorien de Wit, the paradox of scientific explanation was visualized in a creative manner.

The jury was unanimous in its decision to award the René Coelho award to Wouter Venema.
“In the work of Wouter Venema personal engagement, technical proficiency, design and the will to tell a story come together convincingly. His installation examines the preservation of memories and the possibility of archiving them in word and visual images. The stories are literally and figuratively small and fragmentary, but give the spectator sufficient cause for associative empathy with the protagonists or situations. The plan Wouter Venema submitted was also well prepared and generated confidence that with the aid of the award it could be translated into a fine new work.”
