In the period from October 28 through November 25, 2000, the Netherlands Media Art Institute, Montevideo/Time Based Arts (NIM) and Axis, foundation for Art and Gender, are organizing an exhibition with artists who have been inspired by the games culture.

Arno Coenen / Last Roadtrip

Digital culture has restored homo ludens ('playing man') to his place of honour. Internet, cd-roms and other interactive media stimulate the user to a playful quest for information in an environment of moving animations and sound. The advance of commercial video and computer games has been characteristic of this development. The influence of games, played by young and old, is also to be found in the work of many artists. The specific culture and aesthetic of games has given rise to different (non-linear) narrative structures, visual language and animated representations. The exhibition presents artists who use elements from the world of games in very different ways in their work.

Marita Liulia / Son of A Bitch

Arno Coenen
takes us with him to America on his Last Roadtrip. It is a hallucinatory journey through 'real-virtuality,' through the hyper-real landscapes of the 'Far West.' At the same time tasteless and colourful, the virtual camera drowns itself in the symbols of America's 'white trash,' Ronald McD., suburban paranoia and domestic violence.

Marita Liulia exhibits the installation Son of a Bitch, a dive into masculinity, a cd-rom with a cinematic character. In her search for the ideal man she ends up in the apartment of Jack L. Froid, psychoanalyst and expert on males. The man himself disappears in a mysterious way, but he leaves behind a room full of new information about the male gender.

Andy Best en Merja Puustinen / Iceborg

In the interactive work of Andy Best and Merja Puustinen, the science fiction aesthetic is central. In their most recent work, Iceborg, they present a science fiction world in which traditional role models for men and women are a thing of the past.

Annika Larsson / Perfect Game

Annika Larsson
reaches back to 'old-fashioned' games. In her video Perfect Game three men are playing jackstraws. Pulled out of their work situation, Larsson sets the men in the middle of her own 'non-narrative' performance. The obtrusive and detailed manner in which she delineates her players stimulates the claustrophobia of the void in which only Larsson has full control.

Camille Utterback en Romy Achituv / Text Rain

Body and language are the starting point for Camille Utterback and Romy Achituv's installation. In Text Rain the viewer becomes the performer by playing with the letters of a poem.

In addition to the installations there are also a number of internet games to be seen, which revise the conventional language, structure and/or aesthetic of games in a critical manner.
