Collections
Through this catalogue, various collections can be accessed. The first three collections are the ‘core’ collections of the Netherlands Media Art Institute; all works in these collections are also in distribution, which means that they are available for rental by museums, art institutions, galleries, festivals and for educational use. (Read more about our distribution policies here.) For most of the works in these collections, short 30-second video fragments (previews) in RealVideo are available. All the videoworks from the collection can be viewed in the mediatheque. In addition to the video collection, the mediatheque contains a large collection of books, magazines and documentation on contemporary media and art.
1.The collection Nederlands Instituut voor Mediakunst comprises video works and installations that were and are part of the historical collections of Montevideo and Time Based Arts, and more recent works (1998-present) in the current (living) collection of the Netherlands Media Art Institute.
2.The collection Lijnbaancentrum is a historical collection of video art that was acquired by the Lijnbaancentrum, a center for video art which was located in Rotterdam.
3.The collection of De Appel contains a lot of performance art registrations from the 1970s and 1980s.
Other collections are not in distribution; these works can however be accessed for free in the Netherlands Media Art Institute’s mediatheque. Some of the works are illustrated with a video still or a short 30-second video preview in RealVideo.
4.NIMk documentation is a diverse collection of video works, installation registrations, interviews and broadcasts that are not in active distribution by the Netherlands Media Art Institute but that are considered of historical importance in addition to NIMk’s core collections.
5.NIMk archive is a collection of video materials, mainly compilations and registrations, that illustrate the rich history of the Netherlands Media Art Institute and Montevideo. This collection contains many registrations of events organised by NIMk in the past.
6.Furthermore, this catalogue gives access to four collections from other museums and institutions in the Netherlands: ICN (The Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage), Jan van Eyck Academie, Groninger Museum and Kröller Müller Museum.
