Matthias Oostrik
PLPLPL.PL PT.9: (Lost presence)

interactive installation, 2012

PROJECT
In this interactive mapping sculpture each segment of the installation shows a different moment in time. The audience, unaware of its digital presence at first, approaches the installation curiously. They stand, for a moment, in awe. Just as they are ready to move on, somebody discovers their own image on one of the many segments of the object. This is the starting point for a broad variety of actions and responses. Ranging from staring to dancing, narcissism to kissing and from jumping to laughing. Evoked by a highly fragmented playback.

In PLPLPL.PL PT.9 Matthias Oostrik presents us with a reconstructed and altered perception of time, behaviour and presence. He transforms a known virtual representation of ourselves - the camera vision - and scatters it over the polygon surface. This triggers the audience to interact with their virtual presence in a new and unexpected way. Discovering yourself over and over again, PLPLPL.PL PT.9 is extending our notion of reality through a virtual and computer controlled component. Spectators become part of a large collective memory; caught like butterflies in virtual jars.

BIO
In the work of Matthias Oostrik the audience is always present. Sometimes as an object, other times as a subject, but always as a starting point for a visual dialogue. He finished the Netherlands Film and Television Academy in 2004 with a degree in Interactive Media and Visual Effects. In the following years he concentrated on various techniques for visual interaction, resulting in temporary video installations in and around his hometown of Amsterdam.
In recent years his work has shifted to more permanent installations for public spaces and has been presented at various festivals around Europe (Mapping Festival, Geneva / TodaysArt, The Hague). The light installation Bijlmer Moodwall, located in a passageway in Amsterdam, received a Dutch Design Award for best product in public space.

))))) repetition at my distance

Kinetic/light/sound installation, 2012

PROJECT
“))))) repetition at my distance” is a kinetic/light/sound installation based on a subjective interpretation of sound traveling through space. The memory of wind passing through trees becomes tangible as a field of 16 rotating vertical blue light wires, oscillating in spreading patterns. The wires behave like a living entity of individuals, that respond to different forces.
Over time they develop situations that evoke strong associations with natural phenomena and show organic choreographies and gestures shifting back and forth between the natural and the robotic. Its presence reconstructs architecture through a composition of light, movement, sound, and an absence thereof.
The piece suggests space via horizontal and vertical light flows, and through wind and whistle sonic elements derived from noise and sine waves. The flickering of light produces after- images on the retina, that become an integral part of the experience as they blend with the light produced by the installation.

With “))))) repetition at my distance” Gabey Tjon A Tham crafted a new audiovisual instrument, which makes it possible to play back a virtual representation of a natural phenomena within physical space, by controlling digital and mechanical systems. This instrument and its computer system can produce an immersive and reality-altering composition of sound, movement, light and space.

BIO
Gabey Tjon A Tham, Netherlands, (1988) is an installation artist working with an extensive variety of media and art forms. During her years in Fine Arts at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague, her work developed from the two-dimensional surface to more interdisciplinary attitudes and site-specific/spatial installations, in which she discovered a particular interest for the medium sound and installation as distinct phenomena.

Her work consists of re-contextualized excerpts from reality that gain their form within a space of architecture, in which the perceiver is reverted to the process of reflection on its own thoughts and associations.

SCHWARM

Generative software process; 2012, Dimensions variable

PROJECT
The software Schwarm is a constantly changing abstract composition running in real time. A uniformly moving collection of particles moves across a surface and leaves behind overlapping traces. This results in an unpredictable sequence of unique images. The software analyzes a sequence of images and uses their color values as the foundation for its drawing particles, which it then spreads, like a brush would spread paint. The paths taken by the individual lines are influenced by randomness. After a predefined amount of time a new image becomes the source of the composition and all values defining shape and direction of the movement are being reset. The transition between the images happens seamlessly and is barely perceptible watching the software in real time. The photographs only serve as a source for color and composition. The main focus is the ephemeral nature of the ever-changing composition.

While Schwarm has an almost tangible character - like the paintbrush stroke on a canvas - its not created directly by a human being. The work comes into being through software which executes a coded behaviour. By doing so, the computer system becomes an integral part of the creation and perception of the artwork itself. Interesting about this work is the almost organic and emotional representation Fischer created to experience a virtual computer process.

BIO
Andreas Nicolas Fischer (1982, Germany) concerns himself with the physical manifestation of digital processes and data through generative systems. Andreas is a graduate from the class of professor Joachim Sauter at the Berlin University of the Arts. His work has been shown at museums, galleries and festivals in Europe, Asia and the U.S. Selected exhibitions include “Stadt am Rande” at the Today Art Museum in Beijing (2010), “Locate Me” at Kunstraum Kreuzberg in Berlin,“Seeing / Knowing” at the Graham Gund Gallery in Gambier, Ohio as well as his most recent solo show “NOISE” at Dixit Algorizmi Gallery Berlin (all in 2011).

Sound Of Signals

six-channel interactive sound sculpture, 2012

PROJECT
Sound Of Signals is a six-channel interactive sound sculpture, in which the visitor becomes part of a physical, sonic space of signals. The work speaks the language of communication technology; the speakers are autonomous entities in a polyphony of signals. The interactor forms a network with these entities through his behaviour.

In their latest collaborative project Koek and Lubberdink tap into virtual and undetected layers of modern communication signals between our mobile devices and the networks surrounding us. The installation allows visitors to experience the ubiquitous connections between us and these networks.

The work has been created especially for the FIBER exhibition

BIO ROBIN KOEK
Robin Koek (Netherlands, 1987) is active as a composer, musician and designer of artistic systems. Over the last years he established a repertoire of various multidisciplinary collaborations. With a main focus on sound art and interactive systems, he was involved in projects that range from installation art to interactive dancepieces. These works were shown among others at STRP Festival, Robodock and at Dansmakers Amsterdam.

His works explore states wherein acoustic, digital and analog signals intertwine and form in to one body of sound. These hybrid aesthetics originate from his roots in improvised music. Currently his focus is on compositions that explore the spatial potential of sound. These works immerse the audience and construct a new reality. Advancing this line of work he is realising the enterprise Architecsonic, merging sonic art and architecture.

As a musician he performed at several places like Bimhuis, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Trouw. He is connected to various ensembles like Radio Kootwijk Live, Distant Drummers and Odd One Out. Koek earned a Bachelor with Honours and a Master of Arts specialised in Sound Design at the Utrecht School of the Arts, Faculty of Music Technology in 2011.

BIO LEON LUBBERDINK
Leon Lubberdink (Netherlands, 1982) has developed a distinctive sound over the last years. He started DJing eight years ago and over time he developed an interest in producing his own music. He composed several tracks such as for example the soundtrack of last year’s documentation video of FIBER Festival. Especially his musical productions, a result of hours of hard work, are characterized by deep dub sounds with a nice melancholic touch.

Recently Leon has been involved in the sound design for several audiovisual projects. He created the audio scores for festival teasers and designed the sonic entity of installations like the 360 panorama project by DEFRAME (together with Robin Koek), which was presented at the Oddstream festival 2011.

Next to his activities as sound designer, producer and DJ, he’s a member of FIBER and one of the thriving forces behind the music program of the FIBER Festival and monthly FIBER podcast.

Lieven van Velthoven
Virtual Growth

interactive projection mapping installation; 2010

PROJECT
Watch virtual ‘life’ overgrow the real world! This installation by Lieven van Velthoven starts from one or two spots and it will slowly but surely spread out and trace the world. Certain areas may remain ‘uninfected’. People can use their body to carry the ‘life’ to a new place, from where it will then continue spreading.

This installation does live interactive projection mapping using a projector, laptop and infrared camera. Running in real-time, it works without prior knowledge of the location and can be moved around freely, even during operation. Just point it wherever it may look interesting!

BIO
Lieven van Velthoven is a game designer and hard/software hacker. He studies Media Technology in Leiden and develops games and generative visuals. Everything is either live or interacts. While he is still finalizing his study, his works have already been exhibited at places like FIBER Festival, Discovery Festival, Cinekid and ZKM Medien Museum in Karlsruhe.

DATABOOTH

Meta-art project

‘Databooth’ is an ongoing meta-art project. In this project data - produced by interactive or generative installations - is uploaded to the web. External developers can tap into different types of data and can use it for new visualisations or applications. All the installations on display in the exhibition ‘(Im)possible Worlds’ at the Netherlands Media Art Institute will be hooked on to the network. The data will be pushed to the online platform COSM and can be used by remote developers as a new artistic source or tool. This ends up being- to our knowledge - the first art exhibition with an API. We invite everyone to join us and explore the possibilities of digital art with an API. %u2028%u2028‘Databooth’ started at the 2011 edition of the FIBER Festival and is maintained by Sietse van der Meer (FIBER), Heinze Havinga (Left Foot Media) and a growing group of developers, designers and artists.

App Gallery

A personal selection of audiovisual applications
2012

Devices like the iPad, iPhone and Android tablet make it possible to touch and control audiovisual spaces which artists are creating within applications (Apps). These artistic Apps incorporate the characteristics of instruments, works of art and practical appliances for theirs mobile artistic applications which explore new interactions between sound, visuals, data and their environment.

For this exhibition we asked a small group of befriended developers, artists, designers and musicians to co-curate a small selection of Apps, which explore new ways of interacting with sound, space, movement and visuals. Together we’ll The result is a highly incomplete, personal selection of influential, innovative and experimental applications. Apps which turn mobile technology devices like the iPad, iPhone, Android phone into instruments and sound/visual interfaces to visualize certain data or experience generative artworks.

Visitors can browse online through the Apps, watch their video’s and experience some of the Apps themselves.
