Installation Documentation and Preservation Case Study: Are You Afraid of Video by Servaas
Servaas
Are You Afaid of Video? (1984-1994)
collection Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam
'Are You Afraid of Video?' contains four monitors with a whip installed in the middle. The monitors show television images. Every time the image shows violence, the whip slaps. The artist intended to tape new fragments every year between 1984-1994, but after a couple of years Servaas realized that the violence on television did not change much. During the exhibition Thirty Years of Dutch Video Art the monitors were presented sunken in the stage, because both Stedelijk Museum and the Netherlands Media Art Institute preferred this from a aesthetic point of view.
