Project Conservation of the Netherlands Collection of Media Art completed / SBMK Day

Over two years now the Netherlands Media Art Institute has undertaken the long-term preservation of the Media art collection of the Netherlands. Next to the physical conservation of the collections of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Netherlands Cultural Heritage Agency, Kröller-Müller Museum, Netherlands Media Art Institute, Van Abbemuseum, de Appel, Groningen Museum, Bonnefanten Museum, V2, the Rijksakademie and others by the NIMk, two research studies were carried out, the first into born digital art in the Netherlands and the second into the copyright aspects of the on-line presentation of media art. For these investigations SBMK and NIMk sought the cooperation of Virtueel Platform, DEN and Kennisland.

The conservation of the Netherlands Collection of Media Art has contributed to a broadening and interchange of knowledge and good practice, but also to widening the network and plans for further cooperation in this field. The collaboration between NIMk and SBMk was crucial in this project. The SBMK functioned as the intermediary for the media art collections in the Netherlands, to the extent that they are in museal collections of contemporary art. The NIMk functioned as the specialist in the field of the conservation of media art. Because the NIMk will cease to exist as of 1 January, 2013, both organizations are making every effort to assure the consolidation of the expertise and knowledge in this field, in order to assure the long-term future of the media art collections. A new organization is presently being started, under the working name title VH MV (Voorheen Montevideo / Formerly known as Montevideo).

On 8 November, 2012, the results of the Conservation of the Netherlands Collection of Media art Project will be presented on the SBMK Day. Presentations and workshops will be given by Gaby Wijers, Annet Dekker, Wiel Seuskens and Ivo van Stiphout, among others, on state of the art media art conservation. In addition there will be attention for copyright issues, a.o. through the presentation of an on-line tool which make clear what measures you can/must take to make video artworks and collections public online.
