Guerilla Media: Control your own cloud

Workshop Guerilla Media: Control your own cloud
by Rui Guerra

The workshop on June 22 has been canceled!!
New date: July 13, 2012

Internet freedom has become increasingly disputed. Governments want to regulate it and internet providers want to restrict access to parts of it. To help us remember that the internet can exist without centralized control, INTK has created unCloud.

The project is part of the current show 'Yes we're open' at NIMk

The workshop “Guerilla Media: Control your own cloud” is based on an existing application, unCloud, that enables anyone with a laptop to create an open wireless network and distribute their own information. Participants explore the internal architecture of the Web by creating local networks where they control both the content and the communication protocols. The workshop culminates on a small guerrilla action where some of the ideas behind unCloud are applied to Amsterdam’s context.

Rui Guerra

Rui Guerra is involved in open culture with a critical view on communities. Besides teaching at the The Royal Academy of Art in The Hague he co-founded INTK, an interdisciplinary group of artists, designers and software developers that research and develop critical interventions that reflect on art, technology and society.

Being a critical open cultures advocate, Rui Guerra has developed a number of models, self-organising principles and strategies for shifting culture online, and what to do with it once it’s there. His work questions and challenges the norms and hierarchies of ‘high-end’ cultural institutions and suggests that the time has come to reflect the true economic and political value of online culture within governmental policy.
