Platform 2 // Guido van der Werve and Driessens/Verstappen

Platform 2 presents two works from the NIMk collection, selected in the context of the Sonic Acts exhibition, Travelling Time.

Guido van der Werve
Nummer negen (The day I didn't turn with the world), 2007
What happens when you take a day off, refusing to turn along with the world? Such a motionless and actionless day has no consequences, one would think. Van der Werve took this question literally enough and left for the North Pole, where he spent 24 hours on the axis of the world. For one whole day he did not move along with the Earth, but the planet rather revolved around him; just look at his shadow. This almost Copernican inversion is both cool and pathetic, absurd and poetic, grotesque and moving. A tiny man in the middle of a white icy plane full of swirling powder snow. It was a huge stunt to say the least, which had the crew wondering whether he would make it. How long can a man stand still at more degrees below zero than we can measure here? Twenty-four hours is a long time; it must have been perseverance which unexpectedly prevailed over stamina. Supported by a piano solo composed and played by Van der Werve himself, Nummer negen represents a dramatic climax in this artist’s series of numbered tapes.

Driessens / Verstappen
Kennemerduinen, 2010
'Kennemerduinen 2010' is a project for which the artists documented seven locations in the National Park, the Kennemer Dunes, in the province North-Holland. Each film has a duration of nine minutes and covers exactly one year, from one January to the next. On a weekly basis, every scene was repeatedly photographed from the same position and at the same time of day, around noon. With custom developed software, each series of shots was edited into fluid transitions to make changes in seasons and landscape visible. Slow processes of transformation that are never directly perceptible in daily life, are made perceptible on a sensory level. The calmness - that one experiences on the site concerned - is still present in the resulting films.

Platform 2 is NIMk's new exhibition space. This second space, which is situated on the second floor, is an alternative, autonomous space with presentations that run parallel with the exhibitions programmed on the first floor.
