TIME FRAME Durban - Critical Reflection
The project:
Explored the intersection of public space, private space, people, the 2010 world cup and creative new media / digital art technologies.
Took the artist out of the studio and into the streets.
Promoted collaboration between participating artists, and between participating artists and members of communities.
Addressed the lack of new media / digital art projects and platforms in Durban.
Has become a starting point for future collaborations.
Media attention for the project included:
Artpick of the week in the Mail & Guardian
Radio interviews with a range of local and national radio stations
The presentation and exhibition were attended by members of the press who gave positive feedback
Audiences:
The audiences ranged depending on the event
Seminar: the seminar was attended by students and professionals within relevant creative fields (including creative directors from prominent advertising agencies).
Presentation KZNSA: there was a focused group of students, professionals and interested members of the (predominantly middle class) public.
Exhibition DAG: The turnout was upwards of 50 people on the opening night (which is good in the context of Durban).
Presentation back in the market: as many of the market traders were not able to attend the opening, and the opening hours of the gallery conflict with working hours, “banothando” was presented back to the women involved in the project in the market.
Impact on artists and dala as an organisation:
The project has had interesting spin offs for artists and the organisation
The possibility for TIME_FRAME to return to Durban has been initiated, with the hope to develop a continuation of the project in 2011, in collaboration with the Durban Art Gallery “banothando” is being developed further for exhibition around Europe and artists Rike Sitas and Lilia Romero Perez have started discussing further possible collaborations between South Africa, Mexico and the Netherlands
Discussions between dala and the Durban Art Gallery have commenced around developing a platform for new media and digital art on a more ongoing basis
NIMk gave dala copies of some of their digital art collection and they have been used as educational tools in the Multimedia Design department at Vega.
