Collection tour Witty

On the occasion of the exhibition witty, lo-fi works with knotty thoughts (May 15 - July 24, 2010), this guided tour showcases a number of works from the NIMk collection that display similar methods and aesthetics as the installations in the exhibition. This tour has been compiled by Petra Heck, curator of the exhibition witty, lo-fi works with knotty thoughts.

This tour consists of performative, lo-fi video works with a touch of humour, created by female artists. The selected videos date back to various historical periods: from the 1970s, when video was still in its infancy, until contemporary video art. Such a glimpse in the recent history of media art provides insight in video developments over the past decades. The specific visual quality in the 1970s and 1980s was a direct consequence of the simplicity of the available equipment - but in contemporary video, the lo-fi character of a work is often a conscious decision.

The videos in this guided tour show early, performative experiments in relation with video as a medium, works that employ collage in order to react on film, witty performative works with technical effects, or works in which the theatrical (the decor) is emphasized. |
