2 and 3 December 2011

Nan Hoover (1931-2008) is widely recognized as one of the pioneers of Dutch media art, and as a multimedia artist she was way ahead of her time. The influence on her own generation but especially on younger generations of artists cannot be overestimated. On December 2 and 3 NIMk, in co-operation with the Nan Hoover Foundation, presents a comprehensive program highlighting the work of Nan Hoover and new work inspired by Nan Hoover.

Nan Hoover has continuously been searching for the best form to express her ideas. Therefore she was willing to change media, and was not afraid of endless technical experimentation. In her work, Nan Hoover (1931-2008) had a clear goal: she wanted to exite the viewer's imagination. She wanted to open a dialogue. Rather than imposing anything, she wanted to place something before him or her. Essentially, as she said herself in an interview: “I am not telling the viewer, this is a cup of tea, I am saying, this could be a cup of tea, what do you think?”. Allthough during the dfifferent phases of her long career she employed various disciplines in order to achieve this goal – video, performance, photography, drawing, sculpture and painting – the tools she used were actually always the same: light, movement, time and space.

In her long career as an artist, teacher and friend she inspired so many of us. Her memory, heritage and archive is living and vital, in use and re-use in the current contemporary artistic and curatorial practice. The program Inspired by Nan Hoover highlights both, her work and her heritage.

15:00 – 15:15 "could you return it to me afterwards please?" by Christina Della Giustina.

"could you return it to me afterwards please?" is the performance of conversations with Nan Hoover by means of texts from the booklet ‘music as weather [vol. II], on trusting’. ‘music as weather’ is the collection of daily notes gathered while working. This collection of observations, thoughts, and questions builds an archive at the junction between light coming from an object, and light coming from the gaze. The voices in ‘music as weather’ are many, mainly distinguishable through the different languages in which they speak.
They are voices of the mind, succeeding, crossing, lapping each other. And although they converse, attempting to repeat and re-enact each other in different languages, any translation is different from the original, and foremost addresses and articulates differences. There is no original that can be traced. Rather, the voices here are in a continues process oscillating between not knowing and devising, a continues translation invented in its’ making.

‘music as weather’ respectively and recurrently refers to light- and weather conditions:

I still speak to you about the weather; it’s vital.
The weather is subject to change.
The weather changes and brings about change.
It is you, fused with the weather, who reminds me to go for what wants to become

music as weather, vol. II, on trusting, is dedicated to Nan Hoover

"could you return it to me afterwards please?” was a performance in de frame of ‘I am a painter, early video works and late works on paper by Nan Hoover’, Gallery Soledad Senlle, Amsterdam, NL; April 4 2009 by Christina Della Giustina.

15:25 – 16:00
Inspired by Nan Hoover, 2011
: This light installation and performance by Sandro Dukic will be site specific and come about entirely on location at NIMk. In the line of Nan Hoovers work Sandro Dukic will move fluently from one medium to another - from spatial, architectonic and photographic installations and constructed films - to another with ease. Within these movements, he applies different layers and meanings of spaces and by doing that he defines himself as virtual visual artist with tendency towards critical interpretation of space and momentum of the artwork. After the performance the audience is invited to experience the installation and to discuss the installation with Sandro Dukic.

16:00 – 17:00
Black and White..., Nan Hoover, 2001

‘Black and White...’ is one of Nan Hoover's characteristic video installations presenting a triad of elements: body, light and movement. Throughout her career, Hoover has explored an ambivalent space generated by those three elements through video, which has been an extensive device of her painting practice. This installation consists of monitors, cameras and lights. Like in other installations by Hoover, also silence plays a crucial role. The tranquility of the silent dark space allows the visitor to experience subtle changes of contrast between shadow and light created with black and white images. In this manner,
Hoover relates the visitor to the spatial context and provokes the visitor to observe and digest the ambiguity created by their own movement. Nan Hoover first made Black and White... in 2001 for her solo exhibition Dialogue that took place in the Netherlands Media Art Institute in Amsterdam. The audience is invited to experience the installation, Gaby Wijers (NIMk) and her team will give an insight view into the research and reconstruction of this work. On december 6 the research will be presented at NIMk in the scope of To Transfer or to Transform.

17:00 – 18:00
The audiovisual part of Nan Hoover's archive is mapped now.
NIMk is proud to announce the preservation and distribution of 'new' works by Nan Hoover; to be inspired.

Your welcome to join us together with the Nan Hoover Foundation for a drink!
